Job Purpose Statement: The job of elementary teacher is done for the purpose of facilitating student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing District approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.  The elementary school teacher will instruct and supervise a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful learning environment while promoting high standards of performance for all students regardless of their background and developmental levels.  

 

This position includes Music instruction for grades K-5, as well as some support for English Language Development.  ESOL endorsed and bilingual in Spanish/English preferred. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-045).  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Essential duties of this position include the following. 

• Model and teach respect with an awareness of diversity.
• Vary and pace classroom strategies to accommodate different learning styles, actively involve students and maximize student engagement in meaningful learning.
• Effectively work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
• Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment. 
• Assesses students for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
• Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum. 
• Use current body of knowledge in cultural diversity issues in teaching and curriculum development to design and adapt individual/group academic and behavior/social programs in all school settings.
• Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum. 
• Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students. 
• Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study. 
• Assist school staff and administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct, reinforce individual school’s plan for positive behavior support, develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior and utilize effective, proactive behavior management skills in all school settings
• Participate in development and implementation of individual student plans (e.g., IEP, 504).
• Work as part of the school team to fully implement Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
• Maintains regular and appropriate attendance and is on time for assignment(s) for the purpose of meeting the needs of the students and the district. 
• Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. 
• Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress. 
• Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policy.
• Perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds the confidence of staff, students and the public in the Hood River County School District and enhances learning.
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following a schedule.
• Observe laws, district policies and procedures, and professional standards for this position.
• Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse student, parent and community populations.
• Carry out work responsibilities with strong organizational skills, effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions.
• Respect confidential information and the privacy of students, staff and parents.
• Collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize and utilize information and records electronically and by using traditional methods.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

• Valid Oregon teacher’s license with a K-12 music endorsement required; ESOL endorsement preferred.
• Understanding of human growth and development patterns, learning theory and brain research.
• Knowledge of musical instruction at the elementary level, both vocal and instrumental.
• Experience teaching music at the elementary level.
• Familiarity with a variety of age appropriate instructional, assessment and classroom management strategies that reflect current research on best practices.
• Familiarity with state standards and curriculum frameworks for elementary school levels.
• Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of state and federal education laws and of student and staff rights.
• Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations.
• Ability to effectively manage and supervise students and their work.
• Ability to coordinate and arrange evening music performances throughout the assignment.
• Ability to direct the work of other staff members.

 Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: 

• Skills to motivate students in one or more areas of music, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.  Bilingual skills in English/Spanish preferred.
• Knowledge of curriculum, education code, district policies, musical instruction and instrumentation. 
• Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet attendance, schedule and other deadlines.  Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/ field of vision.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

• Possess a valid Oregon Teaching License with a Music endorsement (required) and ESOL endorsement (preferred) or be eligible to apply for a teaching license by the time the position is to begin in August, 2024.
