This posting will remain open until filled. The 2025/26 swim season begins in November 2025.  We may fill more than one assistant coaching position from this pool, at either full time or half-time, based on the number of student athletes.

Job Purpose StatementThe primary purpose of this Assistant Swim Coach position is to perform leadership to assigned athletic program, coaching duties as well as assisting in duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head Coach. The  Assistant Coach will assist in the leadership and organization of the HRVHS Swim program and coach the team.   Lead in establishing an environment in which athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image; assist in directing the promotion of sportsmanship, a winning attitude and commitment to student academic success.

 

Essential Job Functions:    

  • Assist in the direction and supervision of organized practices sessions during the regulated Swim season; to include seasonal goals and objectives. 
  • Embrace and support equity and equal access to athletics for all interested students.
  • Work cooperatively with parents, other coaches, staff, and support programs. 
  • Assists the Head Coach and Athletic Director in setting up pool facility for athletic competitions. 
  • Assists Head Coach and Athletic Director in purchasing equipment, supplies and uniforms for the particular sport. 
  • Assists Head Coach and Athletic Director in meet scheduling when needed. 
  • Assist in the responsibility to conduct pre-season meeting with all athletes and parents, outlining schedules, student athletic contracts, and Student Athletic Handbook. 
  • Works to improve skills and knowledge of each athlete and the team as a whole. 
  • Assist in the organization of team members according to competitive levels. 
  • Enforces appropriate team rules and team discipline. 
  • Follows guidelines and principles of sportsmanship, equity and access to our sports programs.
  • Adheres to requirements of athletic eligibility. 
  • Adheres to District Athletic Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures of league or OSAA rules. 
  • Works harmoniously with high school Head Coach, community volunteers, parents, and school personnel. 
  • Communicates effectively (both orally and written) with students, parents, officials, and staff. 
  • Assists in submitting rosters, equipment and uniform inventories and other reports as required.
  • Coordinates end of year awards, communications, and events. 
  • Assists in monitoring expenditures in relation to budget and assist as in monitoring proper use, care, and return of uniforms and other assigned equipment. 
  • Assists in the supervision and/or arranges for proper supervision of students/athletes during practices, meets, travel, and related activities. 
  • Assists in the coordination and responsibility of media communications related to swimming at the high school level. 
  • Consults with Head Coach, Athletic Director and Administration concerning playing conditions, safety concerns, program improvements, player performance, outside complaints, and other related matters.
  • Attends work regularly and is punctual, fulfilling the requirements of the position and meeting the expectations of the District.
  • Responsible for immediately reporting to Law Enforcement or Department of Human Services any instance of suspected child abuse according to (ORS 419B.010).

Qualifications:

  • Previous swim coaching experience preferred, including youth or high school level.
  • Knowledge and experience in the sport of swimming.
  • Ability to collaborate with youth programs, students, parents, the community, staff, and other HRVHS coaches.
  • Ability to coach in collaboration with the other coaching staff.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others, keeping emotions under control, remaining open to other ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit.   
  • Ability to be a positive role model, both in and out of the pool.
  • Willingness to coach after school, travel, and supervise students.
  • Meet attendance requirements for the position.
  • Possess current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Possess OSAA/State Department of Education Coaching certification (NFHS or ASEP), Steroid and Concussion Training Certifications.
  • Successful fundraising experience. 
  • Experience with in-school recruitment of athletes and team building.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish helpful. 

Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. College degree Preferred.

 

Experience Required: Previous experience coaching youth swimming preferred.

 

Licenses, Certifications or Bonding Required: NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certification or ASEP Certifications; Concussion training, Heat Illness Prevention, Performance enhancing Drugs & Substances Training, First Aid/CPR Certification  

 

Required Testing: Any offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory results of:

  • Drug screening tests for any illegal drug or substance classified in Schedules I through V under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 811 to 812. This includes, but is not limited to, marijuana, mind-altering substances or narcotic drugs such as hallucinogens, amphetamines, barbiturates, or any other illegal drug or controlled substance, except those federally recognized as legally prescribed by a physician and used as directed.
  • Post-offer physical abilities assessment.

  • Fingerprint-based nation-wide background clearance.

Compensation will be through an Extra Duty Coaching Contract. The range is listed below is for a 1.0 FTE coaching contract.  A half-time position would be half of this amount. Step placement is made by the HR Department, based on verified prior paid coaching experience in the same sport, at the same responsiblity level.
